From Gregory of Cyprus to Theodora Raoulaina: emotions and cross-sex friendship in Byzantine letters

Alevtina Matveeva presented on October 17th as part of the LAMPS Autumn Seminar Series 2022, which this year was held on the theme of ‘Emotions, Identity and the Self.’

Alevtina Matveeva is a postgraduate student in Medieval Studies at Moscow State University. Her Master’s research was dedicated to emotions in the correspondence belonging to the famous Byzantine theologian Nicholas Kabasilas (1321/22—1399). Under the supervision of prof. Béatrice Caseau, she wrote her MA thesis in French Emotions in Middle Byzantine hagiographic texts (9-11th century) within the walls of the French College in Moscow. Now she is continuing her research of Byzantine emotions and the Byzantine “private literary letters.”
